A good smartphone that you don’t notice due to worship of the “Chinese” – LG G8s ThinQ
About LG so long ago nothing was heard that enthusiasts began to whisper, they say, the company is already dead. But the Koreans do not give up, and are working on their mistakes. And here we have the first LG smartphone that we should not wait to laugh at the price and forget about it forever, but as a real alternative to Samsung and the Chinese. But nothing foreshadowed …
Right are those who say that LG is doing badly. They don’t buy mobile phones, so LG shifts the profits from the sale of TVs to the mobile division, develops cheap smartphones in conjunction with the Indian Micromax (as if Audi had asked AvtoVAZ for help), and in Russia has not been making any gestures for half a year already. The last LG smartphone to start selling in the Russian Federation was the G7 Fit – a stripped-down version of the flagship LG G7 with a high-quality screen, good sound and water protection, but a slow processor and terrible autonomy. It was in January 2019, the first batch was sold out with difficulty, new ones were not brought.
After that, LG realized that it was necessary to do the “circumcision” of the smartphone in other characteristics, took the time to think, released the “coolest” LG V50, the “ordinary flagship” LG G8, and for Russia they prepared its cheaper version of LG G8s.
Enthusiasts will now probably remember that all of these LGs, which were deteriorated for Russia and the banana republics, were usually a dubious purchase for big money – I immediately recall the LG G5 SE, in which they asked for the same money for a hot and gluttonous Snapdragon 652 processor with a small battery for the full-fledged LG G5 with Snapdragon 820 abroad.
But there are two important differences:
Now the smartphone no longer looks crooked and stupid in terms of a set of characteristics
LG promised a reasonable (as far as possible for Koreans) and competitive price.
And here it is and wrap it up …
Still, the design of smartphones can become obsolete even in the modern era of rounded bricks with cutouts in the screens. The LG G8 began to be designed even at a time when it was still an honor to redraw the iPhone X, finished designing at the peak of the compact cut-out “droplets”, and now, when a circle is cut out for the selfie camera on the screen, or the camera is extendable, and the screen is maximized frameless.
But here we have a smartphone – “new”, for which they have not even announced the price, but it looks like a model two years ago. Because this broadest monobrow in the screen came to us just from 2017, and many manufacturers have already managed to take it to where it belongs – to the museum of ugly design in smartphone manufacturing.
And this will greatly interfere with sales of the LG G8s, even though the smartphone is generally good – they are greeted all the same by clothes.
By the way, it’s very funny to watch how Koreans are hypocritical and present the space on the sides of the bangs as a “second screen”. If you do not understand, LG thus hints that they did not redraw the “fringe” of the iPhone, but simply added a “separate screen for notifications”, as was the case with the LG V20, V10 and X View smartphones. In any case, I want to immediately fill the space around the cutout with completely black color so as not to see this horror. And imagine how bad it would be if on the left, near the clock, some kind of nonsense like MegaFon Fastest was spinning instead of notifications.
Case materials are also a little embarrassing. Yes, now all (not only flagship) smartphones have become glass and glossy. But only at LG, and even Nokia 9 PureView, the case is purposely mirror-piano. While Huawei and Xiaomi are playing with gradient (mixed) colors, OPPO is trying to put a “silk” touch to a shiny alloy of glass and plastic, and Samsung is selling most of the Galaxy S10 in a beautiful and not brand-name mother-of-pearl color, LG chooses “silver metallic”. Yes, it all looks very cool, but only until you pick up your smartphone and turn the back cover into a kind of greasy chicken grilled tray. If LG will give you a choice of several colors in Russia, it is better to choose a white smartphone – it will not be so pathetic in appearance, but the most practical.
one minus is that the power and lock button (it’s on the right) is easily confused with the Google Assistant call button (it’s on the left). Given that the volume control here is carried out by separate buttons, rather than a solid rocker, this number of identical-looking buttons on a smartphone sometimes causes confusion. But you can get used to it.
By the way, unlike the “just” LG G8, in which the cameras are installed flush with the body, in the G8s they slightly protrude as a horizontal block above the back panel. It’s very Samsung-style, but better than the next again stolen from the iPhone and redrawn cameras with a vertical block, as Huawei likes to do.
And there is no curved screen, thank God, but there are simply very small frames on the sides. It would always be so.
